The Dave Grohl Story
by Jeff Apter
Published - 2006 by Omnibus Press
I was never a major fan of Nirvana but for some reason Foo Fighters struck a chord with me. They may not be sleaze rock but they are an ass kicking rock band, one I have followed closely. That’s why I couldn’t wait to read a biography about the so called “nicest guy in rock”.
Apter really has done his research and covers Grohl’s career in a detailed fashion from childhood all the way to a show on Dec 1 2005 at the Sydney Superdome. The book contains rare pictures of Dave’s early days amongst the Washington DC hardcore scene as well as the standard Nirvana photos. It’s interesting to read some of the influences Grohl had while forging his early bands and the conditions he had to endure on some of his first tours with Scream. Naturally Foo Fighters get a huge mention as well as the Probot and Queens of the Stone Age projects.
I really enjoyed this book and I’d say this is as good as it gets without Grohl himself writing it. My one bone of contention is the endless mentions of the DC hardcore band Bad Brains. I get it, they were a huge influence on Dave but I felt a little bashed over the head with it. That aside a good read and insight into what makes the guy tick and the countless little facts and stats are a nice touch.
