Recorded at the height of his power in 1978, this showcases the Motor City Madman ripping through what would later become his classic hits on one of the best known live albums of the seventies.
From the opener ‘Just What the Doctor Ordered’ featuring the soulful vocals of Derek St. Holmes, this album is a sonic punch to the face and the rest serves as the pummelling blows one endures in a Motor-City street fight.
This record would also showcase two non album cuts in ‘Yank Me, Crank Me’ and ‘Gonzo’ which absolutely burn with sheer ferocity and it makes one wonder why they didn't sneak on to any of the previous albums.
Nugent's bezerker version of the blues classic ‘Baby Please Don't Go’ comes next at truly breakneck speed and barely let's up before going into the epic live staple of ‘The Great White Buffalo’. To me, this is the standout track on this record and whenever I think of this album it is this song that really defines what this album is about.
‘Stranglehold’, the jewel of the Nugent crown in the minds of many takes on a spacey an eerie vibe in the aftermath of the titanic opening riffs which if played at high volume can make anyone feel ready to fight the world with a sense of fear that the world just might not be a formidable enough opponent.
Closing out this set is the frazzled insanity of ‘Motor City Madhouse’ which is filled with the Nuge's dive bombs from his Gibson Byrdland and some of the fastest riffing the world had ever heard at that time, though I think that there are few that will disagree with the fact that Ted truly had the world in his hand at this point. Armed with the vocals of David St. Holmes and the aforementioned songs above, this was Ted at his best. This one is truly "what the doctor ordered".
