By the time of this album Motley Crue were officially “the most fucked up band in America” and probably the world for that matter. They were a mess but they somehow managed to punch out a decent album, selling a huge amount in the process and creating at least two of their biggest and best hits.

I really enjoy ‘Girls Girls Girls’ but I find it to be a fluctuating album with some really great moments, some just okay and a few light and dark shades with regards to the lyrical content. ‘Dancing On Glass’ is all about Nikki’s heroin addiction, ‘Wild Side’ about the ‘Crue’s hard partying and ‘Nona’ an ode to Nikki’s Grandmother who had passed away not too long before this album.

Despite telling of the pitfalls that come with decadence ‘Wild Side’ is a great song, one of the best, and it never fails to lift the mood. The opening riff is classic and continues to captivate the air guitarist within us all throughout the entire song. Again on the poster child for Motley music, ‘Girls Girls Girls’ has great guitar chords and a fantastic rhythm. Unashamedly about the ‘Crue’s love of women and strip clubs this song is the ultimate Motley song.

Apart from those two songs though, it’s the rest that maybe gives this one a lightweight feel, at least in its original format. ‘Nona’ runs for 1:27 leaving only 8 other full and original tracks. The boogie rock of ‘All In The Name Of…’ and the ballad ‘You’re All I Need’ are quite good but ‘Dancing On Glass’ makes a big statement and is a very open and honest track with a catchy chorus.

The sick, twisted love song ‘You’re All I Need’ has a great story behind it as Nikki first wrote it and gave it to an ex-girlfriend after she broke up with him. It’s a well crafted song and is easily mistaken for a sweet emotion invoking love song. In a way it is but the main character ends up killing his girlfriend in the end, very cool stuff with an Alice Cooper quality about it.

This album is must have Motley Crue even though the band themselves acknowledge it could have been better. But these days though the re-release of ‘Girls Girls Girls’ has taken the place of the original and includes a whole wad of extra material including four unreleased tracks, a live version of ‘All In The Name Of…’ plus an enhanced video of the ‘Girls Girls Girls’ film clip so you’re getting your money’s worth.
