If Motley Crue and Def Leppard had a baby (Motley of course being the strong male genes and Def Leppard the female) then it would sound like Dirty Penny!
Big hooks, great riffs, harmonic choruses, fun lyrics and a good dose of sleazy 80s glam metal give Dirty Penny a fantastic retro sound. ‘Sleeze Disease’ will have you singing and punching your fists along to the huge choruses on pretty much every track.
Just like Crazy Lixx, Dirty Penny seem to have perfected that great blend of all the best and catchiest parts of rock n roll in the 80s. Songs like ‘Midnight Ride’ ‘ Runnin’ Wild’ ‘Hot & Heavy’ ‘Black N’ Blue’ ‘Vendetta’ ‘Scream & Shout’ and ‘Sleeze Disease’ in particular all bring back the 80s metal with a vengeance. I guess this is where I insert that often over used term “all killer, no filler” but that really does sum it up.
Rather than just hit you straight between the eyes for whole songs Dirty Penny offer some interesting change ups during ‘Runnin’ Wild’ and the boogie blues of ‘Black N’ Blue’ will have you dancin’ and singin’ all night long. The Def Leppard comparisons come in on the mass vocal styling of ‘Sleeze Disease’ early on in ‘Scream & Shout’ and at various times throughout some of the other tracks but the rest of their sound is pure Sunset Strip.
If I re-wrote my top albums of 2007 then ‘Take It Sleezy’ would be right up there. It’s good to see Dirty Penny leading the sleaze charge in the US and is as good as anything coming out of Sweden. I picked this album up, fully autographed, for an unbelievable price direct from the band website but I would have happily paid top dollar because ‘Take It Sleezy’ is worth every Dirty Penny!
