Take one quart Irish, add three quarts German and what do you have? Black Sheriff.

This self titled debut is packed with 10 fast and furious tracks very much down the punk road but with a more melodic rock element than straight out punk bands. I guess you could say it’s sort of like some of bands of the 80s like Hanoi Rocks but not glam.

‘Hard Rock, Country & Rock N Roll’ opens with a great riff continuing throughout the track hardly leaving anytime whatsoever to come up for air. It’s one of the best tunes on the disc and I’d say one of those that errs more on the traditional rock n roll side of things.

‘Runnin On Empty’ is another with traditional values but its played at a tremendous pace. Including an insane guitar solo this one isn’t likely to bore and will probably have you driving well over the speed limit, so use caution if you’re listening to this in the car!

‘Vietnam’ was my initial favourite and I believe this is the one the band has chosen as the first single and video. As with the opening track ‘Vietnam’ has a truly fantastic riff. Lyrics here too are also quite amusing with “Let’s get back to Vietnam, I’m John Rambo’s biggest fan, Don’t give a fuck about Uncle Sam tonight” through the chorus.

Somehow throughout the rest of the tracks Black Sheriff seem to jump on either side of the fence and fuse a collective sound of the aforementioned punk and traditional rock n roll elements without losing any impact or coming across as trying too hard to please everyone. All in all it’s a very good first album that I’m sure fans of both sub-genres could get into. Particularly if you like short, fast and loud.
