Sleaze glamsters Babylon Bombs are a band to watch and ‘Doin’ You Nasty’ is an album you should have. This was their second full length release and it has to be said that it’s a collection of frighteningly catchy tunes.
Starting off with the enticing ‘Jaded Heart’ you are taken on a ride of sleaze rock inspired by 80’s legends such as Hanoi Rocks and LA Guns with a familiarity of fellow Swede’s Backyard Babies and The Hellacopters.
‘Doin’ You Nasty’ is choc full of rockin’ tracks so picking out a few of the best is very tough… but here’s a quick run down anyway.
As mentioned ‘Jaded Heart’ draws you in and has a cool melodic element that sets the tone. My favourite, ‘Hometown Hero’ with its harmonic chorus and no bullshit approach to subtle, un-complicated guitar riffs could have been a hit on Australian radio. ‘Proud’ and ‘Slip Away’ are both slower tracks and both are extremely well written while the latter incorporates some of that western, twangy guitar sound that I don’t usually like, but here it works. ‘Starstruck’ ‘Gotta Move On’ ‘White Trash Beauty’ and Moonshine Beat’ are snarling fast tempo balls to the wall tracks with an attitude on par with their 80’s contemporaries. Definitely a highlight bringing it home at the end.
Singer Dani is very clear with his vocals for someone who’s second language is English and the way these songs were mixed has provided a nice gap for them to sit. The rest of the sound is polished but it’s raw enough that you get what you want out of it. Another note is the underlying keyboards that aren’t so noticeable but do provide a very subtle hint to help give a full flavoured overall sound.
Although there are a lot of sleaze bands coming out of Sweden, Babylon Bombs have been around longer than the others and also have something a little different. If you give this album a spin you’ll see why.
