From the ashes of Creed rose Mark Termonti and Scott Phillips to form Alter Bridge and move in a slightly different direction. In came another former Creed member, bass player Brian Marshall, then front man Myles Kennedy (Mayfield Four) joined to complete the line up.
Naturally there are moments on this disc that you get a taste of the old Creed style mainly on the tracks ‘Open Your Eyes’ ‘Broken Wings’ and ‘Burn It Down’ but some of the others offer up a new, punishing, driven hard rock edge.
Myles Kennedy brings a different range to the mix from the mono toned vocals of Creed’s Scott Tapp and the riffs and solos of Mark Tremonti marked a new found energy and exuberance. Brian Marshall provides some really nice, crunch-ingly thick bass lines and Scott Phillips devastates his kit with some big, heavy drumming and a good solid kick.
Although good tracks, the aforementioned “Creed” moments do let this album down a little but ‘Find the Real’, a ball busting opening, ‘Watch Your Words’ and ‘Metalingus’, wrestler Randy Orton’s theme music, absolutely shred metal particularly the latter. ‘One Day Remains’ is another one to watch and a great high tempo track with a lot of distortion and another frantic solo.
Actually it seems Tremonti really let his guitar off the leash during the tracks mentioned above and the whole album would have benefited by receiving the same treatment. ‘One Day Remains’ has a very slick production too and sounds as any contemporary AOR hard album should.
This album wasn’t a complete step away from previous works but the heavier songs were a good indication of where Alter Bridge would ultimately head toward. This is probably a good album for old Creed fans looking for something to hang onto while still being a okay for those new fans who aren’t.
